Information for new scouts & parents
Boy Scout Troop 3 is the oldest troop in San Francisco having been founded in 1914. Troop 3 is sponsored by the Troop 3 Alumni Association and Cathay Post #384 American Legion at 1524 Powell Street.
Troop 3 seeks to develop the mental, physical, and leadership potential of its young men. The troop strives to train its scouts so they can fulfill leadership positions within the troop, with the ultimate goal of having a “boy run” troop, with adults serving as advisors and ensuring that the national standards of safety and appropriate activities are maintained. The scouting program has three specific goals referred to as the “Aims of Scouting.” They are character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness.
What type of activities does Troop 3 participate in?
The goal of our outdoor program is to have one vigorous activity every other month such as a weekend campout, day hike, or community service project. Troop 3 also annually attends a week-long summer camp at Wente Scout Reservation near Willits, California. A high adventure backpack trek every other year in the High Sierras is a highlight for older scouts. An annual doctor signed health exam is required of all scouts.
What does it cost to join Troop 3?
There are two separate yearly registration fees; currently $155 paid online for both national and local council fees, and an additional $120 membership paid directly to our troop. A monthly subscription to Scout Life magazine at $15/year is optional.
If there are financial challenges, please discuss these directly with the Scoutmaster. For need-based situations, the troop does its best to ensure cost is not a limiting factor for scouts.
Parents are encouraged to participate in the troop committee and are expected to provide transportation as able. No scout activity including weekly meetings can take place without at least two registered adults present.
One parent per family is strongly encouraged to become registered with the troop currently at $110 each year. Adults who register with our troop must have a California State background check, complete California Child Abuse Mandated Reporter Online Training, and complete a yearly Youth Protection Training online course.
What does the annual $120 fee pay for?
An official scout shirt, insignia patches, and a scout handbook will be given to each new scout upon joining. It is hoped that scouts who outgrow their shirts or age-out return them to make available for others. A troop neckerchief will be given to all scouts upon earning First Class rank.
Costs for equipment, supplies, and various awards & badges are included in the troop’s annual membership fee. Camping costs (campground fees and meals) are not covered but are split up among the campers who attend.
The troop has all necessary group camping equipment such as tents, lanterns, stoves and cooking equipment needed for our activities. Scouts are required to have their own sleeping bag and personal items. Backpacks are available for loan.
